‘Why not?’ she said. ‘It’s her only chance. If the river doesn’t exist, then she dies there, but let’s not forget, she’s going to die here while we’re away.’

‘And how about you, Daisy?’

Daisy smiled. ‘Yeah. Let’s do this.’

‘Good,’ Archie said. He stood up. ‘Mrs Pye comes to Eden with us. I would not wish for her to know we did not try and help after all she’s done for us.’

Old Man Wood frowned. ‘Yes, well there we have it, Little Adam,’ he said. ‘The heirs have made their decision. We will have to take her.’

He regarded the lady lying peacefully on the table. ‘Strange thing is, she looks identical to the broken lady I carried here all those years ago. She’s so very lovely, in her way.’

Daisy leaned in to him. ‘She was absolutely your biggest fan, Old Man Wood. Did you know that?’

Old Man Wood croaked a muffled response, then pulled himself together.

‘I’m quite sure I won’t be strong enough to carry her away on my own this time,’ he said. ‘Let’s make a stretcher. It will make it a great deal easier that way.’

Little Adam intervened. ‘If we use the rugs, it’ll be a straightforward task. Leave it to me. I’ll tell them what they have to do.’

Twenty-Five

Solomon and Dickinson

‘T hanks,’ Dickinson said, shaking his wrists out and gurning his jaw. ‘For a minute, I thought you wouldn’t see me. He tied those ropes damn tight. Probably because I tied his damn tight too. Rather regret it now.’

‘Well, I’m delighted to help you out of your bondage,’ Solomon replied.

‘Thing is, headmaster, I can’t work out why Stone didn’t kill me, too,’ Dickinson continued. ‘I can only assume that a tiny part of his rational brain kicked in. The man has gone insane. He’s out of control.’

‘Yes, it’s a great relief he’s finally disappeared and with any luck for good,’ Solomon replied. ‘Stone’s caused enough damage here to have significantly hindered the de Lowes in their mission. Without realising, the commissioner may well have single-handedly put the entire future of the world in jeopardy.’

‘Funny how he simply would not listen, headmaster,’ Dickinson agreed. ‘Not to you, not to anyone. He has a sense about what is going on and charges in, jaws like a terrier, holding on until something gives.’

‘Yes, and it’s never, ever him who yields. That’s why he’s had such a successful career isn’t it, Dickinson? Obdurate stubbornness and utter ruthlessness.’

Dickinson had grown fond of the headmaster since they’d met in Stone’s office following Solomon’s evacuation from the tower at Upsall after the storm.

‘Strange how this particular family gene is almost entirely absent in you, headmaster,’ he said, kindly.

‘I’ll take that as a compliment, shall I?’ Solomon said with a smile. ‘I’ve often thought about this too. I suspect we are animals from different points on the compass.’ He rubbed his cracked glasses. ‘I still can’t understand how he could have escaped. I thought you’d tied him up—’

‘And gagged him,’ Dickinson added. ‘He went for a pee at the same time as the explosion.
